I first read the Mahaˉbhaˉrata as a kid, in William Buck’s abridged version, and it hit me hard. I found staggering moral depth there, not to mention superhuman adventure to beggar any comic book. The tale I’ve adapted here, of the guru-warrior Drona’s death in a great war between brothers at the epic’s climax, took perhaps two pages in my childhood edition, but it stuck in my mind like a splinter and stayed there ever since. I hope my retelling conveys a piece of what the story’s meant to me, and encourages people who don’t know the epic to seek it out.
